DFW Tower and TRACON Visit & Tour

On Saturday morning, May 5, 2012 we visited and toured the DFW Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) and the DFW Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility. DFW airport actually has 3 Control Towers that manage ground operations, takeoffs and landings on 7 runways. While we were in the West Tower, our host, Philip Hodges, gave a great presentation as he walked us through each of the controller positions and outlined the duties and responsibilities of each member of the on-duty staff.

The TRACON controls air traffic coming into, and going out of, the greater DFW metroplex area and is the conduit between the DFW Control Tower and the enroute control function provided by the Fort Worth Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC).  It was quite an eye-opening experience to see that coordination effort first-hand.
